Department of Defense Education Activity Maintenance Mechanic in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina

Summary About the Position: This position is located at Camp Lejeune NC. Responsibilities Install electrical conduits and wiring, additional circuits, electrical panel boxes and other such components. Perform maintenance on facilities electrical systems such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Use shop mathematics to plan and compute complex projects features. Knowledge to disassemble, repair, and reassemble units such as pumps, compressors, chillers, evaporators, condensers, and align motors. Interpret and apply building plans and blueprints. Receives work orders accompanied by building plans, shop sketches or blueprints. Utilize a variety of tools and test equipment such as system sets, frequency meters, multi meters, voltmeters, and amphometers used to localize trouble in components and circuits. Knowledge of locksmithing tools, and software. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: U.S. Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. To meet the screen out element, applicants should document experience or show the ability to do the following: installing electrical components, and repairing electrical systems such as heating, ventilation, plumbing, carpentry and/or air conditioning - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Physical Effort: Heaviest weight handled by the employee unassisted will normally be 50 pounds and with assistance 100 pounds or more. Uses lifting devices or obtains assistance in moving heavy items. Works from ladders, scaffolding and/or platforms where systems are in hard to reach places, requiring the employee to work in close quarters or in hard to reach places, requiring the employee to work in close quarters or in cramped positions. Work requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate toots when assembling units and replacing defective components, coordination for reading and setting gauges, checking refrigerant leaks, and adjusting controls, and color discrimination to recognize color codes. Work frequently requires stooping, stretching, bending and kneeling for long periods of time. Working Conditions: Works indoors and outdoors on elevated structures and in cramped areas. Subject to discomfort from face masks and/or other protective devices when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants, noxious gases; fumes and acids. Employee is exposed to the dangers of moving equipment, energized electric circuits, sharp metal edges, and toxic fumes while performing the duties of the position. Exposure to electrical conductors, moving objects, sharp edges, etc., may occur along with danger to cuts, burns, and respiratory ailments. Typical safety equipment required on the job is safety shoes, safety glasses, and hard hats.
