Startec Spooling Lead Hand (Day Shift) in Calgary, Alberta

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec Compression & Process is currently recruiting a Spooling Lead Hand to work the dayshift at our Shepard Shop (9423 Shepard Rd SE, Calgary, AB, T2C 4R6). (https://startec.ca/careers-jobs/)   The Spooling Lead Hand oversees and mentors the fabrication team in spooling operations, ensuring adherence to project specifications, safety protocols, and timelines. This role involves identifying skill gaps, providing training, promoting best practices, and optimizing workflow to enhance efficiency. The Spooling Lead Hand collaborates closely with the Spooling Supervisor to communicate progress and address challenges while managing materials, equipment, and budget considerations to meet quality standards.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years working in spooling and/or bench fitting.

  • Extensive experience in B-pressure welding, including welding in high-pressure environments.

  • In-depth knowledge of welding techniques, welding equipment, and relevant welding codes and standards.

  • Strong commitment to safety, including familiarity with safety regulations and protocols.

  • Problem-solving abilities and meticulous attention to detail.

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical assessment, which will include a practical welding test to evaluate welding skills and abilities. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing will be required

    KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):

    TECHNICAL EXPERTISE (Weighting 80%) Fabrication

  • Interpret and apply spool fabrication specifications, including drawings, weld procedure specifications (WPS), and tolerances.

  • Ensure accurate understanding of isometric drawings, geometric tolerances, and spool-specific instructions.

  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of spooling materials (carbon steel, stainless steel) and their behaviour during fabrication.

  • Maintain clean, deburred edges to ensure leak-free, high-quality welds and assemblies.

  • Identify and address fit-up issues to meet fabrication tolerances and project requirements.

  • Execute spool fabrication using processes like SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and MCAW.

  • Operate positioners and fabrication tools for optimal spool assembly.

    Safety

  • Ensure fabrication processes prevent distortion, shrinkage, and fit-up issues.

  • Collaborate with Quality Control to resolve deviations and maintain high-quality workmanship.

  • Promote a safety-first culture by ensuring compliance with protocols and conducting regular safety inspections.

  • Document production, quality inspections, and safety records.

    LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT (Weighting 20%) Team Development

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor the fabrication team in spooling, ensuring compliance with project specifications, safety protocols, and timelines.

  • Identify skill gaps within the team and provide necessary training to enhance spool fabrication techniques.

  • Promote best practices and innovation in spooling operations to align with project goals.

  • Communicate with the Vessel Supervisor to provide updates on fabrication progress and address challenges.

    Operations Management

  • Assign tasks, monitor workflow, and optimize processes to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime.

  • Manage materials and equipment for spool fabrication, ensuring timely availability and resource efficiency.

  • Assist in budget management by balancing material use, labour costs, and quality and safety standards.
