    General Summary:

    The Manager Heavy Equipment is responsible for managing service operations for mobile equipment, vehicles, shop facilities and tools companywide including the Contracting Group with a specific focus on process flow and project management within the Equipment Shop. The Manager Heavy Equipment will oversee and facilitate all repair and maintenance requests ensuring that the requests are fulfilled. The incumbent will train employees, plan, monitor and supervise work within the shop, work with internal and external customers, and will order supplies and inventory.

    Typical shop operating hours are from 6:00 am – 7:00 pm or the evening anywhere from 5:00 pm – 6:00 am. Schedule adaptation and frequent overtime maybe required in this position, including weekends. The individual must practice absolute confidentiality, good judgment, and common sense in all duties and any other tasks assigned by the Director of Fleet Maintenance. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) as required.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complies with all safety policies, procedures, established safe practices, and ensures that all employees reporting to you do the same. Reports all unsafe conditions and actions to a supervisor and/or the Manager Safety and Health

  • Trains, develops and monitors the safety practices (including PPE) of own employees through regularly scheduled safety meetings, one on one development, reminders and disciplinary action, if necessary

  • Follows all requirements listed in the Supervisor Safety Procedures Manual (SSPM) including, but not limited to, safety training, emergency procedures, accident reporting and investigation and employee observations

  • Ensures compliance of production staff with all policies and procedures, OSHA, MSHA, and NCDOT guidelines

  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area and meets other housekeeping needs as required by Sunrock, MSHA 30 CFR 56.20003 and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.22 and ensures that all employees reporting to you do the same

  • Knowledgeable of diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions, electrical systems and structural repairs including welding

  • Schedules and performs repairs communicated on operator inspection forms and fleet status forms

  • Adheres to preventive maintenance guidelines set by the company and manufacturers

  • Diagnoses equipment malfunctions through inspection and diagnostics, reporting findings to the Equipment Shop Supervisor and coordinating maintenance schedules with production managers

  • Provides leadership, guidance and oversight to assigned mechanics

  • Conducts employee reviews, manage shop employee schedules, and timecards

  • Research and sources technical information, orders parts, and arranges outsourced services

  • Completes all required company, state, and federal paperwork to ensure accurate recordings of labor time, parts, and supplies used in Computerized Maintenance Management Information System software (CMMIS)

  • Plans work with Mechanic IV Shop Lead utilizing the latest technical information. Communicates with parts and service providers, obtains quotes, oversees contract maintenance and repair work, component rebuilds and overhauls, and reports status to Director, Fleet Services

  • Ensures timely completion of tasks, assists in parts inventory, and handles maintenance budgets and equipment expenses

  • Monitors and analyzes all opportunities to cut costs and improve efficiencies

  • Identifies cost-saving opportunities, manages rental equipment usage, and participates in training and team initiative to achieve departmental and company goals

  • Leads by example, shares knowledge, and performs additional duties as required

    Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficient in reading, interpreting, and writing English documents including safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and reports effectively communicating with groups of customers and employees

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

  • Intermediate personal computer skills, including electronic mail, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.

  • Ability to utilize maintenance and inventory software and perform data input and retrieval

  • Must be able to have intermediate knowledge of diagnostic procedures utilizing manufacturers’ software and hardware to gauge machine health and its relationship to the condition monitoring program

  • Must be able to have full understanding of preventive maintenance and inspection procedures including current knowledge of filtration, fluids and analysis as well as machine diagnostics and health snapshots and their application in the condition monitoring system

  • Knowledgeable of gas and diesel engine overhauls and other major power train components

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, delegate assignments, meet target goals/deadlines, multitask, and organize

  • May perform most parts of the tasks without direct supervision and instruction

  • Must have advanced knowledge of the subject by being able to identify advanced facts and terms about the subject

    Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required. Certificate in a related field or Degree program from a two-year college or technical school preferred. Ten (10) or more years of related experience and/or training required. Supervisory experience required. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License

  • Class A CDL Preferred

  • Ability to obtain industry related certifications
