REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services, and High School Building Principal

POSITION SUMMARY: A Special Education Teacher is a highly-qualified teacher who provides Integrated Co-teacher services with classroom teachers and also works with students who require strategic intervention in whole-group and small-group settings. The focus of the teacher is to develop and implement specially designed instruction that effectively works to close the achievement gap in students with disabilities. The goal of the Special Education Teacher is to ensure that students are able to master IEP annual goals as well as continuing to work toward mastery of grade-level standards and curriculum through the support of IEP accommodations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides whole group, individual, and/or small group instruction designed to meet individual needs and motivate students in classroom settings and resource rooms.

  • Respond to data and use progress monitoring tools to meet the needs of all students.

  • Co-plan lessons and use instructional materials that meet a wide variety of students' needs.

  • Use Habits of Work (PIRR) to achieve effective participation and learning in all activities and lessons.

  • Evaluate and monitor the educational progress of students with the continuous use of data for a variety of reporting purposes (EX: annual review, progress reports, etc).

  • Develops and nurtures a synchronous relationship with the content specialists in classrooms.

  • Collaborates with the school-based team to maintain and/or create special education documentation on all current and/or initial to CSE students.

  • Effectively communicate progress with teachers, families & administration.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Tapestry Charter School mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior.

  • Prepare progress summaries using the reporting procedures agreed upon by the teaching staff, Director of Student Services and the Principal. Collaborate as needed with other teachers.

  • Check voicemail and email daily and respond promptly or within 24 hours to requests from families, administrators and colleagues.

  • Participate in appropriate professional development activities.

  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

SCHOOL CULTURE/CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create and maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment for students that includes SEL and restorative practices. Model, practice and discuss respectful, unbiased and effective communication with students.

  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.

  • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to teaching and instruction of middle students and special education.

  • Know and have used a variety of intervention models, current programs, and strategies.

  • Child growth and development and behavior characteristics of middle school students.

  • Educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives, and the educational trends and research-based findings pertaining to student educational programming.

  • Behavior management and behavior strategies, techniques, methods and conflict resolution procedures.

  • Socio-economic and cultural background differences of general student population; Cultural responsiveness.

  • Trained in interventions and tiers of RTI.

  • Technology including devices and computer programs.

  • Commitment to the success of all children.

  • Demonstrates success in collaborative teaching, managing a mixed-ability classroom and facilitating performance-based learning.

    EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Professional/Permanent certification in applicable grades/subject area with 3 years of teaching experience.

  • Knowledge of Expeditionary Learning is a plus.

  • Classroom experience is essential.

  • A concentration in, master's degree, or higher, in Special Education.

*Salary based on a Teacher Payscale- Bachelors, Masters, Bachelors + Certification, Masters +Certification plus years of experience.
