GENERAL DUTIES

As a senior staff member serving as a confidential assistant in a Campus or University Executive's office, leads unit initiatives, participates in planning and setting priorities, and drives strategic initiatives to ensure their success.

  • Participates in planning and in setting policies with responsibility for preparing aspects of strategic and operational plans

  • Participates in developing and executing performance management systems to evaluate progress

  • Works with other Campus and University units to oversee complex, high-priority projects, with responsibility for outcomes

  • Represents the Executive in Campus or University-wide activities and may act in his/her place as needed

  • Independently carries out major responsibilities under the Executive's purview, such as monitoring and evaluating unit activities, financial planning and review, serving as chair of key committees, and communications with senior Campus or University management

  • May serve as Chief of Staff of a large Executive Office

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty three colleges within the dynamic City University New York (CUNY) System. Named for the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education. Located in Central Brooklyn, MEC was established in 1970 with a mandate to meet the educational and social needs of the Central Brooklyn community, The College is committed to a student-centered education and advancing knowledge through scholarly research.

Reporting to the President, the Chief of Staff will serve as the president's liaison to both the internal and external community. This confidential executive officer will be a member of the senior staff and play a key role in keeping strategic programs, partnerships, operations, outreach, and reports on schedule, including prioritizing projects to assist in making the best use of the president's time. The Chief of Staff is expected to provide support including evaluating data, researching and preparing documents, managing special projects, and coordinating executive cabinet projects to ensure timely submission to the president.

The Chief of Staff serves as the president's liaison to both internal and external communities and ensures timely and effective communication, leads unit initiatives, provides supervision to support staff in the Office of the President, supports success in achieving broad campus goals, and other duties as assigned.

This is an excluded position.

The major roles and responsibilities include the following:

  • Recommending, developing, implementing, and/or evaluating methods, policies, procedures, and systems to best support the President

  • Preparing and editing confidential material under tight timelines

  • Overseeing the preparation of briefings, presentations, correspondence, and speeches

  • Planning and attending key meetings with both internal and external stakeholders

  • Ensuring the timely completion of tasks in the Office of the President, action items from the President's cabinet, and decisions made by the President

  • Conducting research and analysis for strategic initiatives that are designed to advance the College

  • Preparing sensitive and high-priority communications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Eight years of related experience in the area of higher education setting

  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently and effectively work in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to work with others for the good of the institution.

  • He/she must be sufficiently well versed in the overall functions of a college/university to be able to assume full responsibility, be answerable to his/her college president, and show evidence of exceptional achievement in his or her chosen field as well as potential for future growth.

COMPENSATION

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

$119,995 - $141,858

Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
