Summary :                    

The Pathology Lab Histotechnician performs  all laboratory technical duties related to histopathological slides within the Pathology Laboratory, while reporting to the Path Lab Supervisor/Lab Director/Practice Manager as needed: 

PATHOLOGY LAB SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Accepts laboratory specimens from the accessioning section that will be utilized for processing in the histopathology department.

  • Evaluates the acceptability criteria for each specimen and checks for correct labeling, specimen container and source.

  • Understands the importance of and follows the procedures for appropriate specimen handling and disposal.

  • Understands and follows all the laboratory safety procedures and use of personal protective wear.

  • Performs tissue embedding following established procedures.

  • Performs routine cutting of paraffin blocks on a rotary microtome.

  • Maintains block files.

  • Matches slides and reports to ensure correct information is reported.

  • Stains, coverslips, and labels slides (automated and manual).

  • Performs special staining procedures (automated and manual).

  • Runs parallel checks on reagents used on instruments for routine lab work.

  • Performs specimen QC to ensure specimen is appropriate and properly identified for each bench.

  • Note and resolve all specimens not in compliance.

  • Develops stain troubleshooting skills and develops assay troubleshooting skills.

  • Records and determines causes for assay failure.

  • Maintains adequate stock of working supplies, notifies assistant manager/manager of shortage.

  • Assists with inventory procedures.

  • Participates in required continuing education, in-house training seminars, etc.

  • A working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.

  • Ensure all reagents display the received date, open date and expiration date. Open expiration dates are written on reagent containers, if applicable. When necessary, troubleshoots reagent failures.

  • Maintains quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols. Informs supervisor or manager of problems that might affect or delay result reporting.

  • Ability to understand and use the Laboratory Information System to retrieve pending logs.

  • Regularly checks and records temperatures of incubators, refrigerators, room temperature and humidity. Informs supervisor if corrective action is needed.

  • Keeps testing area, instruments, and department clean.

  • An awareness of the factors that influence test results and the knowledge to avoid it.

  • Assists with other duties within the laboratory as requested by Pathology Lab Director and/or Practice Manger to meet immediate needs of laboratory.

    GENERAL OFFICE RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Exercises all precautions described in the Laboratory Safety Manual.

  • Supports the goals of Associates in Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Millburn Laser Center and maintains a professional manner and demeanor.

  • Complies with all Associates in Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Millburn Laser Center policies and procedures.

    PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.

  • Complete annual educational requirements (Continuing Education).

  • Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.

  • Maintains current knowledge of Laboratory policy as well as other regulatory agencies requirements.

  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.

  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.

  • Attends departmental meetings and in-services as scheduled.

  • Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement.

  • Complies with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or Physics from an accredited institution and 1-3 years’ experience. ASCP certification. State Licensure where applicable (CA, FL and NY require state licensing). Meets the requirements for Testing Personnel under CLIA regulations (42 CFR, part 493.).  Or met the CLIA requirements as allowed by CLIA section 493.1491 and 42CFR493.1489 (B) (2) (b) (4) or (B) (5) (1).

  • A working knowledge of computers, laboratory organization, all departmental operational policies and procedures, Quality Control, Quality Assurance and laboratory safety.

  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary for cooperative interpersonal working relationships with laboratory staff, management, and peers.

  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Typical medical laboratory environment with some risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Moderate noise (e.g., office with many phones ringing, photocopiers, moderate personnel “traffic”), significant communication due to group problem solving efforts.

  • OSHA Category 1: Involves regular exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
