Your Specific Responsibilities:

The incumbent is part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County in its mission to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts and its vision to be the Healthiest State in the Nation. Furthermore, the incumbent is expected to incorporate the agency values of Innovation, Collaboration, Accountability, Responsiveness and Excellence in all aspects of their work.

All activities are performed observing federal, state, department and CHD Information Security and Confidentiality statutes, rules, regulations, policies, Technical Assistance Guidelines (TAGs) and Internal Operating Procedures (IOPs). Works under the direct supervision of the Community Health Nursing Director.

Medical Assistant – Integrated Clinics

  • Prepares clinical area for services prior to clients visit: maintains a clean work area before, during and after services

  • Conducts pre-clinical interviews, to include, but is not limited to: Adult and Adolescent Health, Family Planning, STD, and Immunization histories.

  • Completes: Medical history intake and update to include allergies, current medications, domestic violence screening, and vital signs.

  • Documents all observations and actions accurately utilizing the

  • electronic record, and the Florida Shots Registry

  • Works with the clinical services team that includes physicians, nursing staff, and other paraprofessionals to collect and document health and/or immunization histories for clients in the electronic record as required

  • Consults with supervisors and examiners regarding client needs, concerns or problems.

  • Completes: E-lab requisitions as ordered Enters HMS service codes on the date the service has been provided.

  • Directs clients to laboratory, clinic and examiner; assists examiner and nursing staff.

  • Assess supply levels and reorders as appropriate, maintain positive balances of items required for the optimal functioning of clinic services.

  • Professionally greets and assists customers from culturally diverse backgrounds. Ensures services are

  • provided that satisfy the needs of the customer.

  • Provide emergency coverage as needed.

  • Adheres to laws, regulations, policies and procedures for confidentiality and ethical public health practice (e.g. HIPAA, administrative codes, etc.)

    Medical Assistant – Laboratory

  • Performs Laboratory testing and patient servicing in a Health Department laboratory either alone or in cooperation with another technician or technologist. Acts as a Medical Assistant in a laboratory setting.

  • Performs daily maintenance of equipment

  • Maintains a clean and disinfected environment in lab at all times.

  • Prepares specimens for transport to outside labs

  • Records and maintains records and results as required by Florida statutes. Requisitions supplies as needed

  • Results of lab testing performed are recorded timely and accurately in Electronic Medical Record. Performs venipuncture’s, urine or sputum collection and finger sticks for all clinics on all age groups. Assists Laboratory Manager as needed with quality control of lab testing and equipment

  • Helps coordinate laboratory flow with clinic nursing supervisor and/or Director of Nursing.

    ADDITIONAL JOB-RELATED REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Emergency Duty - Incumbent may be required to work during or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required for the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross Shelters, or to perform other emergency duties including, but limited to responses to or threats involving any disaster, or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

  • Trainings/Meetings - Attend all mandatory meeting/trainings as assigned by the position.

  • Confidentiality-Ensure all information held in the health records is confidential with access governed by state and federal laws during projects assigned. Will keep confidential information including the client's name, address, medical, social, and financial data and services rendered.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to accurately document and maintain client medical charts (manually or electronically)

  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

  • Ability to prioritize workload

  • Computer literacy.

  • Willingness to learn blood draws.

  • Knowledge of TB including transmission, testing and treatments

  • Knowledge of community resources

  • Ability to determine work priorities, assign work, and ensure proper completion of work assignments

  • Ability to communicate effectively

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • Knowledge of the methods of data collection and analysis.

  • Knowledge and application of word, internet/intranet and e-mail computer programs.

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.

    Qualifications:

  • Medical Assistant Certification Florida Statue 458.3485

  • Maintain current CPR Certification

  • Certified Phlebotomist
