Position Details

General Statement

Under the supervision of the Director of Safety and Risk Management ( SRM ), the Health and Safety Specialist performs duties in support of the University’s Environmental Health & Safety Policy by assisting SRM staff in developing and providing training programs and conducting hazard assessments and workplace inspections to ensure Montana State University employee health and safety while also meeting regulatory demands. This position will work closely with fellow SRM team members to implement initiatives designed to provide and further enhance a safe environment for faculty and staff throughout campus. This individual will frequently meet with stakeholders to determine and communicate safe work practices and will be seen as a valuable liaison regarding workplace safety. This is a dynamic role that requires flexibility, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work within a diverse campus community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing, implementing, and reviewing written safety programs including but not limited to Chemical and Laboratory Safety, Fire and Life Safety, Lockout Tagout, Hazard Communication, Hazardous Materials Management, Emergency Response, Fall Protection, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Equipment Safety, Ergonomics, Asbestos, Lead, Hot Work, Heat Related Illness, Confined Spaces, Bloodborne Pathogens, etc.

  • Recommends improvements and changes to existing health and safety programs and their application.

  • Supports, and/or serves on various committees as assigned.

  • Assist SRM staff members in coordinating University-wide facilities inspection programs and reviews reports of accidents, hazard complaints, incident reports, injuries and near misses and investigates causes.

  • Supports fire prevention and code enforcement activities related to large gatherings/functions, including fire life safety inspections, and building inspections.

  • Assists the Chemical Safety Officer in duties associated with chemicals, inspections, and laboratory safety.

  • Assists the Hazardous Materials Manager in duties associated with managing hazardous waste, biological waste, and universal waste as needed.

  • Assists in hazardous material identification and collection support to the Hazardous Materials Manager.

  • Assist with chemical safety incident response support.

  • Incumbent will attend and participate in required training for the use of personal protective equipment and comply with requirements for use of employer-provided equipment.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, health & safety, emergency management, chemistry or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification (or successful completion of course upon hire).

  • Knowledge of applicable EH&S laws, regulations, nationally recognized standards, guidelines, and best practices.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemistry, chemical identification, chemical hazard mitigation strategies and OSHA regulations.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Ability to respond promptly in-person to all campus locations requiring Safety and Risk Management related services.

  • Demonstrated computer skills (Office, web research, etc.).

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrated experience applying 1910.1200 and 1910.1450 in laboratory environments.

  • Demonstrated experience applying 1910.147 and 1910.146.

  • Demonstrated experience applying 1926.20.

  • Demonstrated experience applying 1910 Subpart Z.

  • Demonstrate experience applying 40 CFR .

  • Certified Safety Professional credential or Associate Safety Professional credential.

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager credential.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemical use in research environments, and features and interactive properties of products used in a large public organization.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of university setting.

    Physical Demands

  • Position requires remaining in a stationary position, positioning self to kneeling, ascending/descending ladders, and transporting up to 50 pounds.

  • Position requires working in laboratory environments and outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Position may encounter confined spaces, tunnels, work-at-height, hazardous materials and waste, noise, dust, and temperature extremes.

  • Position requires the ability to wear PPE such as safety glasses and goggles, respiratory protection, and protective coveralls.
