Job Description:

Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Staff Scientist (geologist) in our Blacksburg, Virginia office. We are looking for a motivated candidate to join our collaborative team and work on projects close to home and across the country.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Plan, coordinate, and document geotechnical field work

  • Communicate effectively with subcontractors, project managers, and clients

  • Log test borings and prepare boring logs

  • Review boring logs and material classifications

  • Assign, perform, and review laboratory tests

  • Develop basic plans and figures using CAD and GIS programs

  • Assist in preparation of geotechnical proposals and reports

  • Observe geotechnical-related construction and prepare daily observation reports

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in either:

  • Engineering Geology, Geological Engineering, Geophysics, or related Geological Science from an accredited program

  • Completion of geotechnical or geology focused undergraduate coursework

  • 0-3 years of professional experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Willingness and ability to perform field work and travel, including assignments that may last several weeks away from the office.

  • Strong work ethic and a desire for continual self-improvement

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Ability to lift 60 pounds and physically be able to negotiate construction sites, enter trenches, climb ladders, and work outside

Desired Skills/Experience:

  • Prior internship or professional work in a related field (e.g., geotechnical engineering, construction, civil engineering, etc.)

  • AutoCAD Civil3D, OpenGround, and/or GIS experience

  • GIT designation

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening
