St. Luke's University Health Network Medical Records Specialist (First Shift Bethlehem Hybrid Work Schedule) in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

The HIM Specialist provides coverage and support for all ROI functions as needed.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for and coordinates the entire release of information process among the inpatient and outpatient records.

  • Acts as liaison between the HIM Department and risk manager when dealing with attorney requests; court orders; subpoenas; litigation and/or other potential risk areas.

  • Responsible for coordinating all subpoenas in the hospital among the medical records department, laboratory/pathology and radiology departments.

  • Coordinates work with the outside service utilized for all billable requests. Logs requests upon receipt for processing.

  • Responsible for maintaining and keeping current the computerized correspondence tracking system. Ensures that all requests are logged in the system.

  • Responsible for adhering to HIPAA regulations regarding release of information.

  • Responsible for adhering to the regulations for the release of information as it relates to HIV/AIDS; psychiatric patients; drug and alcohol patients.

  • Responsible for ascertaining the validity of authorizations received in the department. Returns invalid authorizations.

  • Responsible for coordinating all Network activities associated with RAC requests, appeals, etc.

  • Processes all requests for patient information from Medicare/Medicaid regarding the RAC’s in accordance with established hospital and department policies and procedures, HIPAA and State Laws regarding release of information.

  • Maintains computerized release of information RAC system that logs all activities in the release of RAC information.

  • Assist in all areas as ROI and cover all areas when needed.

  • Develop ROI workflow and validate new computer systems.

  • Work with IT to assist with acquired facilities legacy EMR.

  • Assists with the development and maintenance of policies and procedures.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sitting for up to 7 hours per day, 3 hours at a time. May require occasional standing/walking for up to 1 hour per day, 30 minutes at a time. Frequently uses fingers for data entry. Frequent use of hands and fingers as it relates to holding patient records. Uses upper extremities to life and/or carry up to 10 pounds. Hearing as it relates to normal hearing. Seeing as it relates to general vision, near vision, peripheral vision and visual monotony. May require stooping, bending and/or reaching above shoulder level.

EDUCATION:

High school graduate / GED required with medical terminology and release of information experience. Work experience in a medical record or office environment with appropriate knowledge base highly considered. Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 2 years in the field.
