Description
A national non-profit, headquartered in the Beltsville, MD area, is seeking a skilled and experienced Director of Finance and Accounting to oversee the organization’s financial operations. This position will manage the organization's financial systems and processes, ensuring compliance and efficiency. Primary responsibilities include financial reporting, budgeting, contract and vendor management, payroll, tax preparation, and auditing. This position also plays a critical role in ensuring fiscal health and supporting decision-making processes for the organization's senior leadership. This would be a hybrid role.
Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Accounting:
Prepare accurate, timely financial reports, including monthly and annual statements.
Analyze financial trends across operational segments and oversee project accounting.
Manage general ledger accounts in accordance with GAAP and reconcile revenue, expenses, and balance sheet accounts.
Contracts & Vendor Management:
Oversee contract billing and collection schedules to ensure cash flow aligns with operational needs.
Develop productive relationships with vendors and financial institutions for timely payments and negotiations.
Policies & Procedures:
Establish accounting policies and procedures for compliance and fraud prevention.
Continuously enhance financial systems, including adoption of IT tools or cloud-based technologies.
Team Management:
Supervise accounting staff and conduct annual performance reviews.
Foster a collaborative team environment and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
Prepare balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and financial analyses to aid strategic planning.
Support department leaders in budget planning and forecasting activities.
Tax & Compliance:
Lead the annual audit process and manage relationships with external auditors.
Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, including tax filings and corporate registrations.
Stay updated on evolving financial regulations and standards to guide organizational practices.
Requirements
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA certification required.
10+ years of financial experience, ideally in a non-profit.
Technical Skills:
Skilled in accounting software platforms; familiarity with Sage or similar tools is preferred.
Proficient in customer relationship management systems.
Core Competencies:
Strong knowledge of GAAP and applicable laws/regulations.
Advanced analytics and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail.
Effective communicator, capable of translating financial data for diverse audiences.
Proven leadership and ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
