International School of Beijing ES Dual Language Instructional Assistant (Chinese) in Beijing, China

JOB GOAL/PURPOSE:

To assist Dual Language (DL) Program teachers and the Dual Language Program Leader in achieving learning objectives that promote student success in bilingualism, biliteracy, high academic achievement and socio-cultural competence within and outside the classroom.

The DLTeacher Assistant will provide:

  • • clerical support

  • • student support: individual or small group instruction

  • • student supervision: individual students, small groups or large groups

    The DL Teacher Assistant is expected to provide student instructional support in the target languages of Mandarin and English on a consistent basis as directed by the supervising teacher.

    DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITES:

    • Under supervision and guidance of the DL teacher and program leader, contributes to the school-level Dual Language educational program and its organization and management.

  • Provide individual and/or small group instruction in the target languages, i.e. English and Mandarin, to students

  • Contribute to and maintain assigned classroom records and files in a complete, up-to-date manner

  • Engages and contributes to Dual Language Program-related activities

    • Assists with organization and management of all curricular areas as directed by a teacher.

  • Maintain instructional materials as required

  • Prepare, compile and copy instructional materials

  • Distribute and collect materials

  • Perform setup and cleanup for instructional projects

    • Contributes to management of student’s behavior within and outside the classroom.

  • Assist teachers in conducting instructional or developmental activities

  • Supervise children during arrival/departure times, recess/lunch periods, and transition times while moving among coming on and off buses or as they go to and from learning spaces or between campus venues

  • Complete supervisory duties assigned to ensure the safety and well-being of children

  • Supervise students while the teacher is occupied

  • Participate in formal and informal staff meetings as requested or assigned

  • Serve as a substitute for the DL classroom teacher as needed

    • Understands and exhibits good judgment in interpersonal and human relations with colleagues, students and community

  • Develop rapport with students

  • Serve as a positive bilingual, bicultural role model for students

  • Use communication skills and conflict resolution strategies to promote positive relationships with students, staff members, and parents

  • Collaborate with Dual Language grade level team members to support student well-being, personal development and academic progress

  • Develop understanding and show sensitivity toward students who require specific needs

    • Demonstrates understanding of rules and regulations covering confidential and sensitive issues.

  • Handle sensitive and confidential documents, communications, incidents, etc., with due discretion and in a conscientious manner

  • Maintain confidentiality of students’ grades, attendance and behavior records, and files

    • Observes International School of Beijing’s employment guidelines.

  • Observe designated work hours

  • Comply with ISB’s guidelines regarding employee dress, conduct and behavior

  • Demonstrate safe, ethical and responsible behavior

    • Participate in other duties as assigned by the Principal or Assistant Principal.

    • Bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of full-time work experience

    • Demonstrated proficiency in Chinese and Mandarin, both written and spoken language

    • Experience and/or knowledge of an inquiry-based, project-based educational setting

    • Genuine interest to serve elementary school-aged children

    • Demonstrated adaptability and openness to new ideas

    • Ability to follow directions, be an active listener, and take initiative

    • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team

    • Appropriate computer skills

    • Possess sufficient mobility to monitor students and manage student behavior in classroom and non-classroom situations.
