Department Summary:

Theater Command and Control and Homeland Defense (Department N123) leads projects and initiatives directly related to the overall Homeland / Air Defense mission. This includes the technology and operational aspects of several sensor and command and control systems in response to the Theater and Homeland air threats (aircraft, cruise missiles, and uncrewed aircraft systems). The N123 activities work across all aspects of the joint engagement sequence to decrease response time and improve mission effectiveness. Across the Department, our goal is to ensure sponsor’s ability to rapidly identify, characterize, and respond to threats to Air Operations.

Roles and Responsibilities:

MITRE's Theater Command and Control (C2)/Homeland Defense (N123) Department is seeking a motivated Systems or Communications Engineer with knowledge of DoD Data Links and Combat Identification capabilities in support of the Battle Control System – Fixed (BCS-F) legacy program. The candidate will work with a small team providing subject matter input for automated data link testing in addition to supporting the Mode 5 Link 16 upgrade associated with the Battle Control System – Fixed.

This position offers a unique opportunity to deliver individual technical contributions with high stakeholder visibility. The work program includes systems engineering and agile software methodologies as well as traditional acquisition technical subject matter expertise areas. Specific technical areas of interest include Link 11, Link 16, Link 22, commercial and Mode 5 Identification of Friend or Foe (IFF) and FAA Next Generation, specifically ADS-B and FENS.

Job Description:

  • Subject matter expert for defining AFSIT based automated testing requirements.

  • Subject matter input for software team working automated data link testing.

  • Perform automated testing and provide guidance based on subject matter expertise.

  • Technical analysis for AFSIT Testing and issue resolution.

  • Subject matter expert for PMO in Mode 5, ADS-B upgrade development, test, and fielding

  • Subject matter input for digital engineering team to incorporate data link functionality.

  • Perform studies/impact analysis on data link changes and future data link migrations needed.

  • The level of coverage could range between 50% and 100% time

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications, or similar field or 3 years of related experience with a related degree

  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DoD Secret clearance

  • Familiarity with DoD Standards such as Link 16, protocols, gateways, and message forwarding

  • Ability to document results through technical and non-technical briefings and documentation

  • Good communication skills

  • Note that this position is located at Bedford, due to need to collaborate in person. While this work does support remote work, on-campus work is expected.

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or training in Link 16 and data link communications network design, configuration, or operations

  • Experience with network configuration and architectures

  • Active DoD Secret clearance
