*If wanting part-time, you will be allowed to work up to 19.5 hours a week for $30/hr.

SUMMARY :

Function: To enforce the law, provide service, information and aid to all citizens as circumstances require, assist and support victims of crime, prevent crime, suppress disturbances, investigate criminal offenses, and arrest offenders. Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

Scope: Responsible for law enforcement duties for the protection, safety and welfare of students, faculty, staff, visitors, and all property under the control and jurisdiction of The University of Texas System, including primary law enforcement jurisdiction in all counties where Lamar University has real property interest and general law enforcement jurisdiction in all other Texas counties. Exercises independent judgment and discretion within the limits prescribed by law, Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents, institutional rules and regulations, and the Lamar University Police Departmental policies and procedures.

DUTIES :

Typical: To perform law enforcement duties on the property under the control and jurisdiction of Lamar University or as otherwise authorized or required by law. Preserve the peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding, when authorized by law, to prevent or suppress crime. Execute all lawful process. Arrest offenders with and without warrant when authorized by law. Investigate criminal offenses to detect and arrest criminals, and recover stolen or lost property. Attempt to locate missing persons. Enforce traffic law by detecting violations, making violator contacts, placing violators in custody or issuing citations or warnings. Investigate motor vehicle collisions. Prepare various written reports narrating law enforcement and police activities. Give credible and accurate testimony in the criminal courts of this state and the United States. Confers with prosecuting attorneys, preserves evidence, and maintains confidential information. Confers with local law enforcement, criminal justice and emergency response agencies on matters of mutual interest. Provides assistance and support to the victims of crime.

SUPERVISION :

Received: Direct supervision of work by Corporals, Sergeants and other supervisors –as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION :

Required: High School Diploma or GED ; and

a. Successful completion of a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement ( TCOLE ) approved Basic Peace Officer Course (or the equivalent as authorized by law and TCOLE rules), has successfully passed the TCOLE peace officer licensing examination, OR

b. Meets the minimum qualifications to attend a Texas Basic Police Officer Academy, as established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, and is currently enrolled in a Police Academy.

EXPERIENCE :

Required: None

EQUIPMENT :

Required: Proficient with all equipment utilized in the performance of assigned duties, to include but not be limited to firearms, restraints, less lethal force weapons and techniques, vehicles, communications equipment, computers, investigative and surveillance equipment.

ACCURACY :

Proficiency in all phases of duties performed. Must demonstrate logical and effective problem solving ability. Must be able to provide creditable testimony in a court of law.

PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES :

Duties involve driving, walking, running, standing, stooping, climbing, crouching, pushing, jumping over, pulling, carrying, reaching above head, lifting, lowering, hand-wrist and elbow motion, grasping, and holding. Good physical condition and vision, ability to hear and speak and full use of arms and legs.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

Usual: Exposure to outside weather conditions. May be required to work either day or night on any one of three shifts with varying days off and on holidays. Work involves a degree of hazard.

Must eligible to hold a Peace Officer Commission issued by Lamar University Police Department and a valid driver’s license not subject to suspension. Must be eligible to drive a University owned or leased motor vehicle. Must meet certain prerequisites established by the Lamar University Police Department and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement concerning age requirements and physical, mental, and educational standards. Must have the physical and mental capabilities to properly carry out responsibilities and duties a commissioned police officer of Lamar University. Effective written and oral communications skills. Knowledge and skills in emergency medical procedures, first aid and CPR techniques.

OTHER :

Must successfully complete a minimum six-month probationary period, immediately following commissioning as a Police Officer.

Must be qualified to be armed at all times when on duty and must be qualified and prepared to execute the obligations, duties and responsibilities of a Texas Peace Officer.

Preferred: 15 college hours from an accredited college or university

EXPERIENCE :

Preferred: Possess Basic Peace Officer Certification and Peace Officer license from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement ( TCOLE ).

One-years’ experience as a full-time commissioned Texas Peace Officer
