Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Group Leader - Math, Stats, and Data Science in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

PNNL is globally recognized as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) research and development. The AI and Data Analytics Division is looking for a leader to manage our Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science (MSDS) group. Our MDSDS Group is focused on mission-driven methodological questions and leveraging the foundations of mathematics and statistics to advance novel algorithms, insights and understanding in data science.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about fundamental research grounded in national security challenges that drive the field of data science forward. This role is perfect for someone who thrives on innovation and is passionate about the national security mission and creating high performing teams. As the Group Leader, you will cultivate a people-focused leadership style, embodying our values while steering the group towards success. You will serve as a research line manager with significant span of control and/or delegated authority and responsibility. Your decisions impact objectives, goals and long-term success of the group and division.

This position is expected to be located in Richland, WA or Seattle, WA.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leadership Excellence : Lead a vibrant team of 80+ data scientists and mathematicians primarily located in Richland and Seattle, WA.

  • Strategic Vision : Working with the division direction and other group leaders, develop and execute a strategy for data science spanning the technology readiness levels ensuring alignment with broader PNNL goals. Build a robust foundation in the group that will enable growth and investment in promising research over the coming years.

  • Collaboration and Growth : Collaborate closely with the other two data science groups in the division to support comprehensive data science solutions for our sponsors and ensure consistent evaluation of staff.

  • Mentorship : Guide the next generation of leaders, providing clear, direct feedback and fostering growth opportunities.

  • Communication and Advocacy : Serve as the interface for NSD sponsors on data science capabilities. Create and deliver impactful briefings that illustrate PNNL’s leadership in data science to increase the lab’s visibility.

  • AIDA Stewardship : Contribute to division strategy objectives as a member of the Al and Data Analytics Division leadership team.

  • Resource Management : Administer overhead budgets and staff development resources to ensure expertise, facilities and equipment are mission-ready.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 10 years work experience -OR-

  • MS/MA or higher and 8 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in mathematics, data science or related field.

  • Expert communication skills, both written and verbal, necessary to effectively explain, present, and influence sponsors, staff and division leadership.

  • Experience with DOD, DHS, DOE and/or other federal agencies.

  • Professional, technical and management accomplishments in data science or mathematics.

  • Supervisory or line management experience of 30 or more technical staff.

  • Experience stewarding technical capabilities.

  • Highly skilled in managing research or technology development projects and teams.

  • Strong record of collaboration.

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills and a love of mentoring others, along with a reputation for integrity and trust.

  • Proven experience in securing project funding and managing budgets.

Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.

Testing Designated Position

This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For foreign national candidates:

If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO)risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.

Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle.
