The Azure SQL team in Azure Data at Microsoft is responsible for Azure SQL DB, SQL MI, SQL VM (IaaS) cloud services, SQL Server on-prem and Arc enabled SQL Server. Together they power many of the world's mission critical databases and are deployed by most of the Fortune 1000 companies. A key part of the database experience is the client SDK's we provide developers for connecting to the SQL family of databases all the way from on-premises to the cloud. These SDK's span a variety of languages and frameworks such as Python, Java, C++, C# and related object relational mapping frameworks.
We are actively seeking a dynamic Principal Engineering Manager to spearhead the formation of a dedicated engineering team. This group's foremost charge is to advance and refine SQL Server Client drivers, focusing not only on improving performance, reliability, maintainability, and usability but also on enhancing driver integration with diverse language-specific data frameworks. In tandem with this effort, the role will also focus on fostering innovation in data API development, facilitating the seamless incorporation of Azure SQL databases into cutting-edge web, mobile, and microservice environments. Moreover, for our open-source drivers, we are committed to broadening our community of contributors. We aim to streamline the onboarding process and collaboration efforts, effectively reducing friction and inviting a wider range of participation. Responsibilities
Leads and develops a team of 10+ engineers to deliver high business impact projects on-time with quality.
Provides technical insight on the following: architecture, design, code reviews, development, quality assurance and live site management.
Provide clarity in scope of work and define accountabilities between teams.
Embraces the values of Microsoft through coaching and collaboration.
Partnering with peer teams working in similar areas .
Qualifications
*Required Qualifications: *
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, Rust, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
OR equivalent experience.
3+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager .
10+ years of experience designing, building and shipping large scale cloud services.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
*Preferred Qualifications: *
Prior development experience with the Rust language is a plus.
Prior experience working with ODBC, JDBC, and other database drivers is a plus.
Prior experience with building API libraries for application developers.
Building applications/micro-services in Azure, AWS or GCP
