Johns Hopkins University Research Technologist in Baltimore, Maryland

The Pathology Department is seeking a Research Technologist who under general supervision performs clinical and research laboratory experiments in a Bio Safety Level 2 setting. The position entails the processing and testing of biological specimens for HIV, HCV, HSV-2, and SARS-CoV-2 related studies. The individual will participate in the planning of experiments and data analysis. Good communication and organizational skills are required as the laboratory is involved in several national and international studies and collaborations. The ideal candidate uses basic scientific knowledge and applies analytical skills to complete assigned projects.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follows established protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory testing and experiments including whole blood and tissue processing, microscopy, ELISA, RNA and DNA extractions, PCR, and viral loads assays.

  • Operates and maintains basic laboratory equipment such as thermal cyclers, pipettes, centrifuges, LN2 freezers, micro plate readers, light microscope, and Bio Safety Cabinets.

  • Maintains an extensive sample repository database and assists with general sample management.

  • Conducts individual as well as collaborative research projects, requiring good organizational skills.

  • Exchanges routine information with other lab members and collaborators in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills.

  • Keeps updated lab records, including notebooks and databases.

  • Prepares and ships supplies to active study sites. Processes and documents samples received from active study sites.

  • Participates in the overall lab maintenance.

Work Environment /While performing the duties of this job.

  • The employee may be required to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods of time.

  • The employee is required to use hands/fingers to touch, type and/or feel. Will operate computer keyboard, and/or laboratory instruments, small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides.

  • Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope) for laboratory positions.

  • Position is primarily in a laboratory environment where exposure to infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed for assigned work areas. Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas.

  • May be required to move lab equipment and/or supplies, usually less than 40 pounds, from one research area to another (within the main lab building or to other campus buildings).

  • Staff may be required to complete annual competency reviews, and must ensure compliance with Johns Hopkins Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices. Annual training and testing requirements.

  • Some areas require on-call duties. Rotating shifts are implemented to cover weekend and holidays as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some related research laboratory experience and knowledge of good lab practices.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel.

Starting Salary Range: $15.50 - $26.00 HRLY ($42,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

Employee group: Full Time

Schedule: M-F 9:00am-5:30pm, occasional weekends/holidays
