Johns Hopkins University Research Specialist in Baltimore, Maryland

We are seeking a Research Specialist in the Division of Endocrinology to join a lab focused on investigating pancreatic islet function in normal health and how islet dysfunction contributes to diseases of glucose homeostasis. As part of the research laboratory group, the specialist will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator (PI) and/or lab manager to design and carry out experiments towards project completion. The specialist will manage day-to-day bench duties without direct observation or management by the PI or Lab Manager.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform metabolic studies on mouse transgenic models.

  • Perform a wide range of cell and molecular biology techniques, particularly RNA isolation and gene expression analysis using Q-PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence, and cell culture.

  • Knowledgeable of and employs good tissue culture techniques.

  • Use sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.

  • Independent troubleshooting of technical and experimental issues.

  • Design and maintain spreadsheets and databases for management and analysis of research data.

  • Perform statistical analyses on research data.

  • Data entry and management using database and other computer software.

  • Bioinformatic analyses of large data sets.

  • Other research-related duties as directed by the PI.

  • May be required to work limited hours on weekends for specific timed experiments.

Essential Job Functions

  • Ensure accuracy and timeliness of data collection.

  • Organize, analyze and summarize the research data to help prepare laboratory and scientific meeting reports on islet and diabetes research.

  • Meet regularly with the PI to discuss study progress.

  • Attend all mandatory research team meetings.

  • Prepare reports as required by the principal investigators and senior scientists on the program.

  • Communicate well with PI and lab members using excellent oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.

  • One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques e.g. Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence, and cell culture.

  • Willingness to work with mouse models, including metabolism assays on live mice, work with tissue (cell) culture, and analyses of human tissue samples.

  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in metabolism, particularly islet/beta-cell biology, glucose metabolism, and beta-cell culture models (such as MIN6 cells) is strongly preferred.

  • Experience with Biostatistics and Bioinformatic analyses are highly desirable.

Starting Salary Range: $16.92 - $29.61 HRLY ($43,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

Employee group: Full Time

Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30am to 5pm
