University of Maryland, Baltimore Open Rank UNIX Systems Administrator or Senior UNIX Systems Administrator in Baltimore, Maryland

The Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS), Informatics Resource Center, is recruiting for an Open Rank UNIX Systems Administrator and Senior UNIX Systems Administrator position. This position will be filled as either the UNIX Systems Administrator or Senior UNIX Systems Administrator. IGS employs multiple omics and bioinformatics approaches to understand function in health and disease, to study molecular and cellular networks in a variety of model systems, and to generate data and bioinformatics resources of value to the international scientific community. The Informatics Resource Center (IRC) at IGS includes faculty and staff with expertise in genomics and transcriptomics in a diverse set of species, microbiome analysis, evolutionary analysis, tool development, visualization platforms, databases, data coordination, and web development. The Genomics Resource Center (GRC) is a high-throughput laboratory and data analysis group supporting the scientific programs of IGS and its collaborators, both across the University of Maryland Baltimore campus and across the globe. Using multiple sequencing and analysis platforms, the GRC generates high-quality genomic data in a cost-effective manner. Together the IRC and GRC support research across a spectrum of biological areas both on the University of Maryland Baltimore campus and around the world. For additional information on protocols and exemptions, please visit theCOVID-19 website. _UNIX Systems Administrator_ PRIMARY DUTIES * Working both independently and on a team, the UNIX Systems Administrator has a role in the installation, support, and maintenance of servers (virtual and physical), storage systems, and operating systems using Red Hat’s Satellite system. * Assist in the planning of scheduled maintenance and resolution of services outages and infrastructure problems. * Assist with the configuration and programming for systems-related projects. * Assist in the development of computational infrastructure built using the latest technologies in high-throughput and high-performance computers and enterprise class storage systems. * Perform operating systems administration, development, installation, maintenance, and upgrades. Tasks include adding/deleting users, setting up/changing workstations/servers, backing up and recovery of data, data archiving, patching, security, and installing/restoring data. * Document day-to-day operations procedures and protocols associated with hardware and operation system environments, as well as reviews system monitoring and logging of abnormalities. * Ensure security and integrity of operating system to increased efficiency for users, applications, operating systems management, etc. Assist in the evaluation of new technologies and products. * Continuously monitoring enterprise Linux vulnerabilities and baseline configuration scan results for corrective action. * Provide technical support for server and resolves operating system and hardware issues for servers utilized by the staff, including upgrading of operating systems to support new applications. * Assist in hardware upgrades, migrations and infrastructure related tasks for application installation and/or upgrades. * Performs other duties as assigned. _Senior UNIX Systems Administrator_ PRIMARY DUTIES * Working independently or overseeing a team, the senior UNIX position has a lead role in the installation, support, and maintenance of servers (virtual and physical), storage systems, or operating systems. * Participates in the planning of scheduled maintenance and resolution of service outages and infrastructure problems. * Responsible for the configuration and deployment of server infrastructure for enterprise projects. * Using the latest technologies in high-throughput and high-performance computers and enterprise class storage systems develops computational infrastructures. * Oversee and performs operating systems installation, hardware deployment, maintenance, patching and upgrades. In addition perform system administration duties as adding/deleting users, setting up/changing workstations/servers, backing up and recovery of data, data archiving, patching, security, and installing/restoring data. * Follows established policy and recommends process changes for operating system policies that would ensure security and integrity or lead to increased efficiency for users, applications, operating systems management, best practices, etc. Assist in the evaluation and acquisition of new technologies and products. * Makes recommendations for upgrades to hardware and software based on existing operations, pending needs and available budget. Advises on new applications to be developed. * Perform reviews of system monitoring and logging abnormalities. Participate in the investigation and resolution of any system related deficiencies. * Responsible for interfacing with other campus technologists and department team members to ensure integration of systems and applications are succinct. * Provide technical support for computer hardware and resolves system and program issues for all applications utilized by the staff, including the upgrading of operating systems to support new applications. * Frequently has team leadership responsibilities and provides training to other IT professionals. * Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications(UNIX Systems Administrator): Education:Bachelor’s in Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Administration, Computer Engineering or a related field. Experience:One (1) year experience with proficient knowledge of enterprise UNIX operating system, such as: such as: Red Hat/Centos, Solaris, AIX, HPUX. Preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Certification/Licensure:Preferred - Red Hat Certified System Administrator, CompTIA Security . Other:Related experience may be substituted for education. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES Knowledge of position requirements. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently. Minimum Qualifications (Senior UNIX Systems Administrator): Education: Bachelors in Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Administration, Computer Engineering or a related field. Experience:Four (4) years of related experience with proficient knowledge of at least one (1) UNIX operating system, such as: such as: Red Hat/Centos, Solaris, AIX, HPUX. Preferably RHEL/Centos or Solaris. Other:Related experience may be substituted for education. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES Knowledge of position requirements.
