Histology Technician

Kelly Science & Clinical is currently recruiting for a Histology Technician with a diagnostic testing laboratory in Austin, TX.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintain patient identity throughout the process of embedding, cutting, staining, and cover slipping.

  • Set up paperwork and specimens for processing.

  • Routinely embed, cut, and stain tissue specimens.

  • Maintain the tissue processor, embedding centers, microtomes, stainer, and cover slipper.

  • Check queue lists and processing lists to ensure accurate orientation during embedding.

  • Report any problematic cases to the supervisor before proceeding.

  • Maintain an orderly and hygienic work area.

Microtomy:

  • Operate the microtome using safe and effective settings, alignments, knife angles, and block orientation.

  • Maintain the microtome on a daily basis.

  • Follow laboratory standards for slide production, including section thickness, number and type of sections, slide type, and section orientation on the slide.

  • Produce sections deep enough to provide a representative view without cutting through with specimen loss.

  • Place sections in the water bath with no carry-over contamination from previous cases.

Tissue embedding:

  • Maintain accurate specimen identification throughout the embedding process.

  • Validate the actual cassettes embedded with the processing log.

  • Note any discrepancies and follow up on them.

  • Select the appropriate mold size for each submitted cassette.

Special staining:

  • Follow laboratory standards for each special stain procedure.

  • Correctly select and sequence chemical solutions and perform appropriate preparation and maintenance techniques to ensure consistent staining results.

  • Select appropriate controls and include a control section with each patient case.

  • Recognize acceptable and unacceptable staining results.

  • Bring staining problems to the attention of lead personnel.

  • Ensure that all special stains are reviewed by the supervisor before submission to the pathologist.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree with 1+ years related experience OR

  • Associate degree with 2+ years of related experience

  • Technologist level certification from the ASCP American Society of Clinical Pathologist is required or eligible

  • Strong understanding of histology principles and techniques, as well as laboratory safety and quality control procedures.

  • Work independently and as part of a team, and be able to communicate effectively with other laboratory staff and pathologist

  • Receiving 100 blocks per day and needs to maintain an embedding and cutting workflow rate of approximately 30 blocks per 2 1/2 hour time period.

  • Technician needs to be able to embed and cut an average of 12 blocks per hour.
