The Sanitation worker uses brooms, mops, scrapers, soaps, scrub brushes, dust pans, extension poles, paint brushes, rollers and a variety of other cleaning supplies to deep clean, scrub and sometimes paint areas that are not routinely accessible for sanitation by the area operator. This is a very entry level position that primarily follows the instructions of a team leader or supervisor to ensure the correct areas of the plant are being sanitized and correct procedures are being followed. This position requires lifting full buckets of water, using common hand tools for cleaning, significant repetitive motions for scraping, mopping, sweeping and scrubbing. While the work of the Sanitation work is not complex, it is arduous and can be very exhausting. The Sanitation worker may have to climb ladders and stairs and work from elevated platforms or work areas. Hoisting tools or supplies up and down to and from evaluated platforms using ropes and buckets is common. Frequent exposure to dust and common cleanser fumes is normal. Basic requirements for this position are the ability to read and comprehend safety work instructions, safety data sheets, and the hazard warnings associated with any cleaning or scrubbing chemicals or compounds. The Sanitation worker must also have basic computational skills necessary to ensure accurate dilution of concentrated cleansers, measure the size and area of a work space to be cleaned or painted, and estimating the correct quantities of products necessary to accomplish these tasks with the proper amount of materials.
