Ohio University Heating Plant Manager in Athens, Ohio

Job Description:

The Heating Plant Manager position exists to provide a safe and healthy environment where members of the campus community can pursue their diverse institutional goals and objectives. They are directly responsible for the daily operations and leadership of the Lausche Heating Plant, all satellite boiler plants, the East and West Chilled Water Plants and the Tunnel Maintenance Shop. They oversee a 24/7 plant operation as well as outside contractors, temporary workers, and student labor.

Lead and Supervise Heating Plant and Tunnel Teams

  • Display leadership that results in teamwork, customer focus, innovation, and continuous process improvement within their organization

  • Oversee and manage budget to ensure operations within allocated resources.

  • Ensures productivity of staff with broad discretion to schedule employees for efficacy as related to assigned work.

  • Evaluate, train, coach, and mentor employees.

  • Manage and maintain records and data entry related to payroll for assigned employees.

  • Coordinates the acquisition of supplies and materials to complete work activities via shop stock, warehouse, storeroom and/or local suppliers.

  • Comply with all laws, University policies and procedures, safety regulations and Collective Bargaining agreement.

  • Represent Facility Management’s interests in building matters with senior administrators, faculty, union officials, governmental officials, regulators, contractors, architects, engineers, project managers, energy purveyors and others.

  • Develop shop work and safety rules specific to area supervised and assist in development of departmental policies and procedures.

  • Serves as duty officer/technical support on scheduled basis to manage after hour emergency situations.

  • Provide technical training to staff.

Daily Operations

  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and provide insight for installation and repair of boiler systems.

  • Set up and calibrate installed or repaired equipment to operate within prescribed specifications.

  • Establishes and monitors equipment preventative maintenance processes, routines, requirements, and frequencies to ensure cost effective operations and life cycle costs.

  • Evaluates and incorporates manufactures recommendations as appropriate Integrates CMMS facility asset inventory and bar coding into processes and routines.

  • Implement procedures and prioritize resources to ensure plant operating efficiency is optimized.

  • Effectively manages internal and external communications with members of Environmental Health & Safety, Facilities Management, customers, vendors, and technicians for scheduled in-house and contract work.

Technical Assistance

  • Advise/Review plans for building construction and renovation projects; makes recommendations on building systems and appropriate technology to ensure efficient facility maintenance and operations.

  • Review and recommend maintenance supply and equipment purchases to ensure efficient facility maintenance and operations.

  • Utilize the Computerized Maintenance Management System ( CMMS ), within the department’s approved processes and procedures, of listed lower-level managers and teams.

Examine work orders and converse with customers and technicians to detect equipment problems and implement corrective actions.

  • Update CMMS records to accurately and timely capture labor and materials costs

  • Review pertinent building operation & maintenance data and adjust work processes to optimize efficiency and costs of the organization.

  • Manage the execution of small contracts for Maintenance & Operations; Ensure contracted work is fully complete and meets the needs of the campus community.

    Directly supervisors up to four (4) Steamfitters and up to sixteen (16) Energy Plant Operating Engineers. May also supervise contract, temporary, and student employees. Possess a strong personal desire for improvement; and the desire to motivate staff to be better tomorrow than they are today. Work with other departmental managers to meet company and departmental goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree, vocational, or technical school degree

  • Driver’s License valid in the Continental US required

  • Minimum of 6 years of related work experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or managerial experience

**An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • State of Ohio Steam Engineers/Boiler Operators License

Advertised Salary:

The salary range for Pay Grade 19 is $68,299 to $117,127 and the targeted hiring range for this position is $68,299 to $92,205, commensurate with the selected candidate’s education and experience while considering internal equity.

RELOCATION allowance or SIGN -ON BONUS of up to 10% of the base salary may also be available!
