Overview

The International / Foreign Sign Language Interpreters will serve as a critical communication liaison, ensuring accurate and clear interpretation for non-English speaking individuals during immigration proceedings and interviews. The role involves providing services both telephonically and in person, maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality.

This position performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of Cayuse.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor telephonic foreign language interpretation during USCIS interviews, ensuring accurate language services are provided by interpreters.

  • Provide direct interpretation services from English to foreign sign languages and from foreign sign languages to English in USCIS locations and DHS facilities.

  • Manage and adapt to the specific time requirements for various types of immigration interviews and calls, including affirmative asylum cases, credible fear screenings, reasonable fear screenings, safe third country screenings, and I-881 applications.

  • Conduct specialized interviews for the Immigration and Refugee Adjudication Division (IRAD), such as at sea protection screenings and well-founded fear interviews.

  • Provide Sign Language interpretation services as required by the government for USCIS employees and individuals involved in USCIS activities and interviews.

  • Coordinate with the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) to confirm Sign Language interpretation services within seventy-two (72) hours of request and ensure necessary arrangements are made.

Qualifications

  • S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.

  • At least eighteen (18) years of age.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in grammar.

  • Obtain one or more certifications in foreign sign languages from recognized institutions within six months of employment, such as:

  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) / National Interpreter Certification (NIC)

  • National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Master

  • Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC)

  • Master Comprehensive Skills Certificate (MSCS)

  • Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI)

  • Certificate of Interpretation (CI)

  • Certificate of Transliteration (CT)

  • Ability to obtain Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Fitness Clearance

  • Must be able to pass a background check. May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.

  • Must possess problem-solving skills.

  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written

  • Ability to respond effectively to customers with a sense of urgency.

  • Proficient in Microsoft and Adobe toolsets, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Acrobat, etc.

  • Highly motivated with the ability to handle and manage multiple tasks at any one time.

  • Ability to forge new relationships, individual and teaming in nature.

  • Must be a Self-starter, that can work independently and as part of a team.

  • Advanced certifications or degrees in interpretation, language studies, or related fields.

  • Experience in providing interpretation services within immigration services, legal settings, or government agencies.

  • Proficiency in multiple sign languages or dialects, as well as spoken foreign languages.

  • Must possess problem-solving skills.

  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Ability to respond effectively to customers with a sense of urgency.

  • Highly motivated with the ability to handle and manage multiple tasks at any one time.

Reports to: Program Manager; Deputy Program Manager

  • Professional office environment.

  • Hybrid work environment. Possibility for telephonic and on-site services.

  • Work may be carried out in a professional office environment, USCIS offices, DHS facilities depending on the needs.

  • Must be able to work at one of the following offices: Arlington, VA, HQASM, MD, Atlanta, GA, Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, Houston, TX, Los Angeles, CA, Miami, FL, New Orleans, LA, Newark, NJ, New York, NY, San Francisco, CA, Tampa, FL for assignments.

  • Must be available to be on-call as needed to accommodate potential job requests.

  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties extended periods of time.

Pay Range

USD $28.73 - USD $28.73 /Hr.
