Position Summary:

The Sam T. Wilson Public Library seeks a part-time Library Assistant 2 (LA2) to join our team and provide exceptional customer service to the Arlington community. The LA2 performs a variety of moderately complex technical and paraprofessional duties in support of various sections and functions of the library, primarily at the circulation desk and within the collection.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide customer service by welcoming patrons, issuing library cards, checking in/out materials, and managing patron accounts.

  • Assist patrons with locating materials, using computers, and explaining procedures (checking out, logging onto the Internet, making copies, etc.).

  • Accept and process fees and other payments.

  • Assist with programming, including children's programming, preparation, displays, and basic marketing.

  • Provide information regarding programs, events, study rooms, etc.

  • Shelve library materials.

  • Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy patron records.

  • Assist with collection management, including processing new materials, donated materials, damaged items, etc.

  • May assist with the processing of InterLibrary Loans or other specialized tasks.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Two years of library experience preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of library systems and databases preferred.

  • Ability to work a regular schedule that includes a combination of days, evenings, and weekends.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • English/Spanish speaking is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to frequently move within the library, file and retrieve books and other items on high shelves, and lift, push/pull, hold/carry items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 35 pounds.

  • Ability to sit for long periods and maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
