Senior Business Controller

About our Team

You will be based in Amsterdam, reporting directly to the Finance Director Global STMJ Journals. You will be working closely with the Management Teams and departments and will receive support from the global Centers of Expertise (CoEs).

About the Role

You will be the Business Controller for Cell Press & The Lancet. You provide financial guidance in strategic decision making and financial stewardship and governance to the management of the Cell Press & The Lancet organizations. You have an important role as a financial business partner to the SVP’s and management teams, supporting and driving strategic and operational decision making. You will operate as the linking pin between the organization and your Finance colleagues, creating an environment in which finance takes a key role in decision-making processes. You will help develop (and prepare) insightful budgets, forecasts, and management reporting, monitor performance, analyze, and explain variances versus budget and forecast, advise and drive actions to deliver on financial targets.

Responsibilities

  • Acting as business partner to senior management in supporting strategic and financial decisions;

  • Developing financial models and scenario planning to support decision making and strategic planning;

  • Providing constructive information to senior management to ensure plans are in place to deliver on financial targets;

  • Reviewing and bringing deep business insights into analyses and reporting of operating performance;

  • Designing (and preparing) insightful and forward-looking monthly reports with commentary on variances;

  • Providing insight into cost drivers and progression and proactively searching for new ways to control costs;

  • Advising the business unit on shaping the strategic direction;

  • Working with the CoEs to develop direct cost, labour and other operating expense driver assumptions.

Requirements

  • Have a master’s in business economics or equivalent financial studies (e.g. CIMA, ACCA);

  • Have excellent knowledge and understanding of financial and management accounting, organization, processes, and systems;

  • Have approximately 5 years of relevant experience in a commercial environment;

  • Have accounting knowledge (IFRS and US GAAP);

  • Have solid analytical and financial modeling skills;

  • Be proactive, 'can-do' mentality, hands-on attitude, able to take initiative;

  • Have good communication skills, across physical, cultural and language barriers;

  • Have system knowledge of Hyperion Planning, Oracle R12.
