Job Description:

The Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology (BBMB) department at Iowa State University is seeking applicants for a Teaching Lab Coordinator. This position will coordinate a team of instructors and support personnel to deliver biochemistry teaching laboratory courses in the department of BBMB. These courses include introductory biochemistry, the biochemistry of beer, intermediate-level analytical biochemistry, and a capstone advanced laboratory in biochemistry. The employee will have primary responsibility for the training and supervision of teaching assistants, managing lab operations and budget, providing experimental support for lab exercises, and working collaboratively with faculty to evolve and develop curricula and deliver instruction. Example of Duties• Evaluates, purchases, and maintains equipment and supplies for a lab program.• Manages the operation and maintenance lab equipment.• Sets up labs to accommodate large amounts of students.• Administers safety protocols.• Supports lab instruction.• Develops new models for lab work and designs lab courses.• Manages budgetary needs.• Identifies and purchases necessary materials for lab coursework and operations.• Instructs, trains, and evaluates staff, graduate assistants, and student workers.Level Guidelines• Intermediate-level position with solid professional and/or technical skills working under general supervision to achieve goals• Applies broad, working knowledge of the principles of the field to moderately complex, difficult, and varied problems and issues• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action and resolve problems• Responds to a broad range of inquiries and requests• May provide training and/or direction to lower-level staff• May lead projects of moderate scope and complexity• Provides guidance to students
