Medical Lab Technician

Responsibilities:

  • CHEMISTRY:8.Has a basic knowledge of and conforms with quality control procedures.9. Responds in a supportive capacity to assist co-workers when workload indicates or when asked by supervisor.10.Demonstrates the performance of testing and assists in the orientation of MT interns or new employees as assigned by the supervisor.11.Participates in the evaluation of MT interns.12.Fulfills all required competency requirements within the stated one year time frame.13.Complies with established occupational exposure policies.14.Follows prescribed strategies to recognize problems, identifies causes (technical or instrumental) and makes appropriate corrections. When no present criteria are available consults supervisor.

  • HEMATOLOGY:8.Has an in-depth knowledge of and conforms with quality control procedures.9. Responds in a supportive capacity to assist co-workers when workload indicates or when asked by supervisor.10.Demonstrates the performance of testing and assists in the orientation of MT interns or new employees as assigned by the supervisor.11.Participates in the evaluation of MT interns.12.Fulfills all required competency requirements within the stated one year time frame.13.Complies with established occupational exposure policies.14.Follows prescribed strategies to recognize a problem, identifies causes (technical or instrumental) and makes appropriate corrections. When no preset criteria are available consults supervisor.15.Has a basic knowledge of and conforms with quality control procedures.

  • HEMATOLOGY:1.Receives and completely processes all specimens for the Hematology Section and referred testing.2.Is responsible for checking inventory of reagents, disposable, etc., and notifies assistant supervisor or supervisor if reordering is necessary.3.Reports patient results clearly and fully, including appropriate messages referring to specimen quality, linearity, repeated and diluted results, etc.4.Calls, faxes and documents all stat, panic value and fax results.5.Accurately and completely logs all information for improvement of QA, i.e. corrective action for down instrumentation, QC problems, unacceptable function checks and reagent shortages, etc.6. Has a working knowledge of the basic theory for all tests performed in the section and is able to perform them as specified in the procedural guidelines.7.Has an understanding of the operation of all the instruments used in Hematology and is able to operate them as prescribed in the Operation Manual, to include all routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting.

  • MICROBIOLOGY:1.Receives and completely processes all specimens for Microbiology Section and referred testing.2.Performs routine microbiologic and serologic analysis as well as urinalysis as prescribed in procedural guidelines.3.Maintains accurate and complete records of all work performed.4.Has basic knowledge of and conforms with quality control procedures.5.Accurately and completely logs all information for improvement of QA, i.e. corrective action for down instrumentation, QC problems, unacceptable function checks and reagent shortages, etc.6.Is responsible for checking inventory of reagents, disposable, etc., and notifies assistant supervisor or supervisor if reordering is necessary.

  • BLOOD BANK:9.Follows prescribed strategies to recognize a problem, identifies causes (technical and instrumental) and makes appropriate corrections. When no present criteria are available, consults supervisor.10.Responds in a supportive capacity to assist co-workers when workload indicates or when asked by supervisor.11.Demonstrates the performance of testing and assists in the orientation of MT interns or new employees as assigned by the supervisor.12.Participates in the evaluation of MT interns.13.Fulfills all required competency requirements within the stated one year time frame.14.Complies with established occupational exposure policies.

  • BLOOD BANK:1.Performs routine serological testing as specified in procedural guidelines.2.Performs advanced antibody resolution techniques when indicated as specified in procedural guidelines.3.Maintains accurate and complete records of all work performed.4.Has basic knowledge of and conforms with quality control procedures.5.Accurately and completely logs all information necessary for improvement of quality assurance, i.e. corrective action for down instrumentation, QC problems, unacceptable function checks, reagent shortages, etc.6.Assists in the maintenance of proper levels of blood and blood products in the hospital blood bank.7.Transfers blood and blood products as specified in procedural guidelines.8.Has a working knowledge of the basic theory for all tests performed in the section and is able to perform them as specified in the procedural guidelines.

  • MICROBIOLOGY:7.Has a working knowledge of the basic theory for all tests performed in the section and is able to perform them as specified in the procedural guidelines.8.Follows prescribed strategies to recognize a problem, identify causes (technical or instrumental) and make appropriate corrections. Associate's degree in a laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)

OR

Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited institution with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science, with 6 months of clinical laboratory experience

OR

equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA '88 for individuals performing high complexity testing. Minimum 1year's experience in a hospital laboratory preferred. Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(ASCP) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
