ESSA Bank & Trust Commercial Loan Underwriter in Allentown, Pennsylvania

ESSA Bank & Trust has an immediate opening for an experienced Commercial Loan Underwriter in Allentown, PA or our Radnor, PA location.

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Underwriter to join our team. As an Underwriter, you will play a crucial role in assessing and evaluating financial risks associated with loan applications and determining the eligibility of borrowers. Your expertise in financial modeling, technical accounting, and data collection will be essential in making informed decisions. Experience: A minimum of eight (8) years of lending and/or underwriting experience normally required.

Qualifications:

Proven experience in underwriting or a related field within the financial services industry

Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and interpretation.

Strong knowledge of financial concepts, technical accounting principles, and underwriting practices.

Familiarity with equity research and loan origination processes.

Excellent mathematical skills with the ability to perform complex calculations.

Knowledge of banking procedures and regulations related to underwriting.

Strong attention to detail and ability to identify potential risks or discrepancies.

Education/Training: Bachelor's degree in business, Finance or related field normally required.

General Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for performing underwriting and administration duties to support the commercial loan function.
  • Achieving goals as established in the Bank's business objectives.
  • Coordinating work within the department, as well as with other departments.
  • Complying with operating policies and procedures established for the commercial loan function.
  • Communicating with appropriate personnel.
  • Maintaining appropriate records and providing assigned reports.
  • Provide guidance and on-the-job training to Credit Analyst I and II's.

Essential Duties:

Performs underwriting and administration duties to support the commercial loan function of which the following are illustrative:

  • Performs pre-screen underwriting and deal structuring for the purpose of bidding on loan transactions.
  • Request financial information on existing Borrowers which includes but is not limited to their accountant prepared financials, both business and personal tax returns and personal financial statements.
  • Organizes information received on prospective and active borrowing accounts, i.e., financial statements, agency reports, and interview and investigation sheets. Analyzes this information and evaluates the short- and long-run prospects of the individual or company.
  • Performs due diligence and underwriting once loans are under application.
  • Verifies and reviews financial statements, tax returns, and other related financial information. Prepare financial statement spreadsheets to facilitate the analysis of the corporate financial statements and tax returns and personal financial statements and tax returns. Review related financial information e.g. credit reports, leases, appraisals and property reports for new loan requests, loan renewals, loan extensions and annual credit reviews. Evaluate business industry and manage issues, analyze trends, and assess overall credit risk. Identify their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Assesses borrower(s) credit worthiness. Prepare the Loan Offering Approval document to be presented to the Commercial Lender, the Management Loan Committee and/or Board of Directors for approval. Responsible for delineating the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed transaction with the appropriate mitigating factors; and is responsible for making recommendations on the loan packages to the appropriate approval signatories along with an appropriate Risk Rating. Ensures that all credit analysis activities are conducted in accordance with prescri ed lending policy.
  • Other duties as needed.
