University at Albany Staff Psychologist/Mental Health Therapist - Counseling and Psychological Services in Albany, New York

This position operates within Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), which provides mental health services to University at Albany students. The Staff Psychologist/Mental Health Therapist provides direct clinical services to students in individual, couples, and group contexts, which aim to alleviate mental health concerns and symptoms and support the success of UAlbany students. Duties for the position include the delivery of triage, counseling, consultation, and crisis intervention services to students experiencing mental health concerns, as well as mental health consultation for faculty, staff, and families with concerns about a student's mental health. The Staff Psychologist/Mental Health Therapist also provides assessment and psychological testing; screening and brief intervention for alcohol and other drug use; clinical supervision and training; and on-call back-up support for the Middle Earth Peer Assistance Hotline. Additionally, this position includes development and delivery of outreach programming and training for students and other members of the campus community related to CAPS services and mental health topics.

Primary Responsibility:

  • Provide triage, assessment, and therapy (individual, couples, group) services to UAlbany students

  • Provide mental health consultation and crisis intervention services to students and faculty, staff, and families concerned about a student

  • Develop and deliver outreach programs, presentations, and trainings for students and other members of the campus community

  • Contribute to department, Division, and University operations that are consistent with strategic goals and strategies through service on committees and workgroups.

  • Provide clinical supervision to a Doctoral Intern or Practicum Trainee, ensuring their professional practices and clinical service delivery are consistent with CAPS, University, and APA goals and strategies. Complete performance management feedback and goals timely and per requirements.

  • Other reasonable duties as assigned

Functional and Supervisory Relationships:

  • Reports to Associate/Clinical Director of CAPS

  • Supervises Doctoral Psychology Intern or Practicum Trainee

  • May supervise employees as assigned (if no direct reports at time of filling position)

Job Requirements:

  • Thorough knowledge regarding the mental health needs of college and university students, including diagnostic considerations and evidence-based treatment approaches.

  • Demonstrated skill in providing effective psychological therapy for a range of mental health concerns for clients from a diverse range of personal and cultural backgrounds.

  • Ability to conduct efficient and effective triage and provide recommendations regarding mental health care as well as referrals for other related services.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide crisis intervention and urgent mental health consultation directly to clients as well as concerned others.

  • Understanding of college and university counseling practices and service models.

  • Talent in the effective delivery of training and programing regarding mental health and suicide prevention.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a multi-disciplinary team internally and with campus colleagues externally.

  • Commitment to cultural humility and ongoing development of multicultural competency in the context of providing inclusive and equitable services.

    Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree from an accredited program in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, or related field OR Doctoral Degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology

  • from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.

  • Eligible for New York State professional license for independent practice (LCSW, LMHC, or Psychologist) within 1 year of hire.

  • 1 to 2 years of experience providing mental health care to college/university students or young adults.

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensed in New York State for independent practice (LCSW, LMHC, or Psychologist).

  • 3+ years of experience in college or university mental health counseling

  • Experience with outreach programming and/or training.

  • Experience as a clinical supervisor.

Working Environment:

  • Office environment with collegial staff

  • Provision of services on both a scheduled appointment and urgent on-demand basis

  • Provision of therapy, consultation, and crisis intervention services can range from low risk to management of high-risk suicidality

  • Occasional evening and weekend presentation and programming obligations

  • 1-2 weekends of on-call hotline back-up coverage per semester

Professional Rank and Salary Grade: Senior Counselor, SL-4, $75,000
