University at Albany Assistant Director of Athletic Communications in Albany, New York

The University at Albany (SUNY) seeks a full-time Assistant Director of Athletic Communications dedicated to supporting the general athletic administration and day-to-day operations within the Athletics Communications Unit.

This position is crucial in managing media relations services for assigned teams both at home and away, with a primary focus on football and men's basketball.

Due to the nature of the position, irregular hours, weekend, evening, and possible holiday hours will be required.

Media Relations and Communication:

  • Proactively generate media attention for the athletic department at local, regional, and national levels.

  • Serve as the primary media relations contact for men's basketball and other assigned sports.

  • Act as the liaison between the athletic department and media, the general public, and the University community.

Content Creation and Management:

  • Ensure the timely and accurate dissemination of sports information via the Internet and social media platforms.

  • Compile, edit, and produce sports media guides and other related publications as needed.

  • Oversee and assist with the production of football and basketball television shows.

    Supervision and Training:

  • Provide direct supervision to graduate and student interns.

  • Offer media training, including interview strategies, for coaches, student-athletes, and staff to effectively communicate sports stories.

Collaboration and Strategy:

  • Collaborate with local, regional, and national media outlets to pitch and execute story ideas promoting the team and individual athletes.

  • Consult with coaches on annual budget considerations for media relations efforts.

Event Management:

  • Manage media relations logistics for selected athletic events.

Compliance and Program Participation:

  • Attend the mandatory sexual violence prevention program as required by federal, state, SUNY, and University policies and procedures at the beginning of the academic year.

    Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, or other relevant field from an accredited institution.

  • One year of experience in marketing, publications, advertising, journalism or other relevant area.

  • One year of experience working in collegiate or professional sports.

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community

  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with desktop publishing, photo shop web site maintenance and statistical reporting software programs.

  • Knowledge of NCAA rules

Professional Rank and Salary Range: Editorial Associate, SL2, $49,000 - $51,000
