New York University Research Assistant in the Division of Social Science [Economiocs] - Dr. Herve Cres in Abu Dhabi, United States

The Division of Social Science, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a research assistant to work on the theory of preference formation over social alternatives, and social choice based on majority voting. The successful applicant will participate to an attempt to resolve an enigma that puzzles social scientists since the works of Condorcet (1785): Why are collective choices in practice so stable and easy to make, when in theory it should go totally otherwise? It explores in depth the mathematical models of majority voting and proposes various explanations of this puzzle. The first part of the project dwells on the study of the combinatorics of individual preference and their aggregation through majority voting. The second part describes the geometry of spatial approaches to the same problem, mostly based on convex analysis and measure theory. The third part explores the axiomatics of the formation of individual preferences, and how they are affected by collective decisions. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists, graduate students and undergraduate students.

Applicants must have a Master in Economics with a strong background in mathematics. Proficiency in Latex and coding for various mathematical simulations is required.

The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, transcript of degree, a one-page summary of research accomplishments and interests, and at least 2 letters of recommendation, all in PDF format.
