Job Dimensions

Role accountable for leadership of a number of specialist platforms which give BT a leading edge in the industry. These include Subsea platform, synchronisation platform, satellite and radio platforms. In totality these platforms underpin revenue in excess of £2bn across the UK and globally with some key accounts and are an enabler to both BT’s 5G and FTTP ambitions

Why this job matters

The purpose of this role is to develop the strategy, create, manage, transform four key and specialist platforms:

  • Subsea platform – providing connectivity globally and across the isles of the UK and playing a crucial role in the rollout of FTTP in Scotland for the R100 project (worth £600m to BT Group).

  • Synchonisation platform – the timing platform essential for 5G services (underpinning £1bn of revenue) and a major component of bids in the Defence Sector (worth in excess of £500m)

  • Satellite platform – not only depicting iconic visions of BT but “connecting for good” key business partners with a revenue in excess of £500m

  • Radio platform – forming a key part of the Critical National Infrastructure whether it’s a revenue of circa £400m or a cost avoidance on hard to reach areas for the Superfast of FTTP deployment.

These are key platforms with a range of customers including Unilever, BBC, SSE, Vodafone, O2, Ministry of Justice (HM Prisons), and UK govt. (MOD, Blue Light Services, Coastguard). This post will necessitate strategic foresight and innovation, well honed development capability and a hunger to drive the capability on these platforms. This broad portfolio of technologies will provide a key opportunity to to support the BT EBITDA targets and create long term sustainable growth.

The role holder has overall accountability for

  • Creating the specialist platform strategy,

  • Establishing and enhancing key and critical vendor and supplier alliances

  • Developing the platform.

  • Leading a multidiscipline team of approximately 100 professionals

Each of these areas will now be considered in turn:

From a strategic perspective the postholder will set the ambitious vision and develop compelling strategies for the platform which will provide BT with a competitive edge. They will influence key stakeholders up to MD and CEO level, optimising and gaining agreement of the circa £60m investment for the domain.

In terms of the key and critical vendor and supplier alliances, the post holder will be a recognised industry leader who will leverage capabilities with partners to exploit technology and broader capability to maximise the benefit to BT.

In developing the platform the leader will continually invigorate the end to end-to-end design, development, and delivery processes. This will also encompass evolving and innovating all aspects of a customer solution including security, customer experience and operations.

Finally, in leading the multidisciplined team; the postholder will also be a change leader who will be instrumental in creating a culture and focus on BT’s imperatives and values and specifically:

  • Contributes to the financial targets by continually embracing opportunities to increase the revenue (currently underpinning £2bn) associated with the platform while being forensic on costs (£60m).

  • Drives towards the skills of the future by recruiting a diverse and talented team in the better workplace locations.

  • Has the personal energy to exemplify and role model a progressive approach continually evaluating new methodologies and opportunities at driving agility in delivery.

  • Harbours a collaborative and thought leadership approach which maximises the potential of both the individual and the team.
